Check qualification thresholds for Grandmaster (GM), International Master (IM), WGM, and WIM norms.
Calculate your new FIDE rating and performance rating instantly
FIDE awards titles based on rating achievements and tournament performances called "norms." A norm is earned by achieving a specified TPR against a field of titled players over 9 games. This calculator helps you determine what you need to score in your next tournament.
| Title | Rating | TPR Needed | Norms | Rated Opponents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GM | 2500 | 2600 | 3 | Min 3 GMs |
| IM | 2400 | 2450 | 3 | Min 3 IMs/GMs |
| WGM | 2300 | 2400 | 3 | Min 3 WGMs |
| WIM | 2200 | 2250 | 3 | Min 3 WIMs |
Some achievements grant a direct title: World Junior Champion → GM; Continental Champion → GM (subject to minimum rating); World Senior Champion → IM; Olympiad gold on board 1 → GM title.
Can I earn all 3 norms in one tournament?
No. Norms must be from at least 2 different tournaments. You can earn at most 1 norm per event.
How long are norms valid?
Norms do not expire. Once earned, they remain valid permanently. You can earn them years apart.
Do online tournaments count?
No. Only over-the-board FIDE-rated tournaments count for title norms. Online ratings are separate.
